Major shifts in Germany's Holstein sire rankings

The December 2025 index run has produced new frontrunners among both the Red- and Holstein proven sires in Germany. For the Red sires, the five-time leadership of De Sanderij Ginger Red has come to an end, while Zivet, the former Holstein leader, lost his top position after just one index run. Additionally, the young sires list shows remarkable shifts once again, with many new names entering the top rankings.

Proven Sires

The Red proven sires list features several interesting newcomers. A major shift is the entry of Red Rocks Mask Red. This Stamkos RC son, bred by the Wesselink family, debuted in August 2022 as the number one genomic sire with an impressive 163 gRZG. Thanks to his strong genetic profile, he quickly attracted attention in several markets, but ultimately Mask Red continued his career via GenHotel to RinderAllianz. His leading position as a young sire brought many opportunities as a sire of sons, and his extensive use led to his promotion to proven sire already in the December 2025 index. With his first 37 milking daughters, Mask Red has strongly confirmed his breeding value, breaking through with, among others, 146 RZG, 123 RZGes, +131 kg milk & fat-protein, and 126 FUN.

In the segment of daughter-proven sires, CEH Spotlight Red (Sputnik RDC x Gywer RDC), bred by the Eberhardt family, is a standout newcomer as well. Spotlight Red showed strong potential early in his genomic career and is now one of the highest Sputnik RDC sons based on his daughters, with 144 RZG from 43 milking daughters. In third place is De Sanderij Ginger Red, who, despite a slight drop in RZG compared to August 2025, had to relinquish his top position with 142 RZG.

The highest polled sire of this run is Elektro P Red (Erotix Red x Born P RDC) with 139 RZG based on 145 daughters. Initially overshadowed during his genomic phase, he has established himself firmly since becoming a proven sire in August 2025. The maternal-brothers Visstein K&L Ghost Red (138 RZG, #5) and Visstein K&L Money P Red (137 RZG, #6) remain among the top of the rankings after several consecutive index runs. The number of milk-producing daughters of Money P Red continues to increase and now exceeds 2,700. One of his youngest sons, Momo Red P, enters the list in seventh place with 136 RZG. Momo Red P originates from a strong German–Canadian family descending from La Presentation Daurel EX-90.

Holding steady in tenth place is De Oosterhof 3STAR Reno Red with 135 gRZG. This Rubels-Red son from the Wilder K family, out of Kalibra SX 5631 Red VG-87, was successfully purchased by a foreign AI company and has more than earned his place among the top sires.

The highest homozygous polled sire is Sailor PP Red (Solitair P Red x Lucky PP Red) with 131 RZG. The highest conformation  sire remains NH Solito Red. This widely used Salvatore RC son scores 139 RZE (126 RZG) and offers an impressive 135 for udder and 119 for feet & legs.

The AltaZarek son Zivet has surrendered his leading position to the debuting proven sire Precision (Proximo x Swift). Zivet scores 146 RZG (556 daughters) in the December run but must give way to the new number one, Precision, who claims the top spot with 148 RZG (133 RZE, 127 RZGes, 0.38% fat). Precision’s debut among the proven sires is exceptionally strong, and his high index makes him an immediate force in the breeding world.

The highest polled sire is Simba P, a KNS Simon P son, who maintains his 143 RZG and remains in fourth place. Simba P ranks just behind Mirco, who also tests at 143 RZG. Mirco, a Mick son, has seen his number of daughters rise significantly since the August run.

New to the list is Chagall, Phönix’s Calvin son, who debuts with 142 RZG, placing him firmly among the top sires. Chagall is known for his outstanding legs and feet and begins his proven career promisingly with 128 milking daughters. Sunrise, with 141 RZG, drops one point and three places compared to August due to the strong newcomers. Another debutant is Capitol (Carenzo x Merryguy) from Synetics, who receives his first daughter-proven breeding value based on 19 daughters. Capitol scores 140 RZG and ranks ninth.

The highest Red Carrier sire is Cohen RDC (139 RZG), a Chilton son owned by Phönix. He continues to impress and remains a valuable addition to breeding programs. At position 100 we find the highest homozygous polled sire: Schreur 3STAR Sampler PP, a Simon P son from Schreur Holsteins and GenHotel, with 132 RZG. Sampler PP descends from the Apina Nadja line and now has a breeding value based on more than 1,000 milking daughters.

In type, Golf—a Garido son from VOST—emerges as the new number one conformation sire with an impressive 145 RZE. Golf narrowly surpasses his AI-stud mate Collin, who tests at 144 RZE. Golf descends from the Westenrade Annie cow family and is an excellent asset to Holstein breeding, especially for improving type traits.

Young Sires

The top 10 among the Red young sires has been thoroughly shaken up. While ELL Schach (Skat P RDC) briefly held the lead, this sire drops two points compared to August, forcing him to share the top spot. With an astounding 159 gRZG, no fewer than five sires—three of them polled—share the number one position. Highest gRZ€ among them is 3STAR OH Maestro (3178 gRZ€), making him Germany’s number one Red gRZ€ sire. Maestro is a Red Shield RDC son with roots tracing back to K&L OH Mabel, bred by De Oosterhof and GenHotel. The highest type improver among these five is Coco Red P, a Cop PP Red son testing 130 gRZE, 140 gRZM, 125 gRZR, and +2018M. Coco descends from the German JS Rosie family of Whittier-Farms Outside Roz. The first sons of Handout P are also breaking through. At 158 gRZG, Heek Red ranks sixth, followed by GlH Spearmint Red and Maksim P Red, who show similar total index values. The top 10 concludes with 3STAR Sheridan Red, another Shield RDC son testing 156 gRZG, from the American Bomaz Delta 7173 family.

In the Holstein genomics list, the Red Carrier Shield RDC son Saturn RDC takes first place with 164 gRZG. His +0.88% fat and +0.16% protein are particularly noteworthy, alongside the 133 gRZE and 132 gRZGes he transmits. Owned by VOST, Saturn RDC pushes August’s former number one, Evenstar (Real Syn x Rainow), down one spot. Sire of sons Real Syn continues to leave a strong mark on the Holstein population. Of the top 15, no fewer than ten are his sons! Number eight Romantiker (Rome x Rainow), with 162 gRZG and a powerful sire stack, is a standout among them. Although Champion son Topchamp drops one point in total breeding value, he remains competitive with the high-testing Real Syn sons, ranking tenth with 160 gRZG. The highest polled sire in December 2025 remains HaH Raven P at 160 gRZG.

The number one homozygous polled sire is PrismaGen Silvanus PP, an HM Strong P son, with 155 gRZG in 50th place.
