From Polled to Red Carrier: Koepon's versatile breeding program

The versatility of the Koepon herd has once again been demonstrated through a series of powerful, well-balanced and genetically outstanding young cows. The last four milking females to show once again underline the strength of two of Koepon's most influential cow families: Lakeside UPS Red Range and Canyon-Breeze EM August EX-92.

Mark your calendar: the next Koepon Sale will be on Thursday, October 8th!

A key contributor to Koepon's polled breeding program is Koepon Mecca Lisa 27 PP GP-84. The homozygous polled SBG Mecca P daughter traces back to the renowned Canyon-Breeze EM August EX-92 family. After calving in August 2025, she had already been extensively flushed as a heifer, resulting in ten female offspring, six of which are homozygous polled.

She was mated to leading North American sires including Siemers Fgo Holy-P 40167, Peak Swisher-P and Winstar Rolf-P RC. The highest genomic results were achieved by Koepon Holy Lisa 44 PP and Koepon Rolf Lisa 45 PP, both scoring 3186 gTPI. These results demonstrate the potential of the Lisa family as a source of elite polled genetics.

The famous Red Range family is equally well represented in this selection, with two great-granddaughters and one granddaughter of the influential Red Range.

One of them is the second-calver Koepon Gameday Range 138 VG-85, a Gameday x Altuve descendant that ranked among the highest genomic females on both the German and American bases as a young heifer calf. Mated to sires such as OCD Trooper Sheepster and Peak AltaSamson, she produced the next generation of elite genetics. One of her highlights is Koepon Sheepster Range 303, which reached 3324 gTPI before freshening earlier this year. In addition, one of her Peak Mingle sons was sold to an international AI organization.

Another standout from the family is Koepon Zoar Range 250 RDC VG-86. This Claynook Zoar granddaughter of Red Range combines her Red Carrier status with excellent type and was recently classified VG-86, including VG-88 for the udder. She continues an impressive line of classified females: VG-86 Zoar x VG-87 Parfect x VG-88 Mark RDC x VG-86 Salvatore RC.

Flushes to the homebred sire Koepon Simply Red resulted in four offspring, including one bull that was sold to an AI organization. She also produced Koepon Karl Range 433 RDC, a Karl Marx daughter carrying the Red Carrier gene and currently testing 3224 gTPI. Around last year's proof run, she briefly ranked as the highest-tested Red Carrier in Europe on the American index.

The combination of polled genetics and the Red Carrier gene comes together in Koepon Otezla Range 196 P Red. This first-lactation Winstar Otezla-P RC daughter is a granddaughter of the multiple bull dam Koepon Altuve Range 6 RDC GP-84 and the only red and polled daughter from Koepon Sput Range 42 Red.

Through extensive embryo work, the number of homozygous polled daughters from this branch of the Range family has led to three. The highest-ranking of these is Koepon Roddie Range 415 PP RDC, combining 3085 gTPI with 341 gNVI. Otezla Range is proving her value not only genomically, but also in production wise. Her projected 305-day lactation stands at 11,231 kg of milk with 4.68% fat and 3.89% protein.
